Glycemic Chart Index Explained

To explain the glycemic chart index is really quite straightforward and more to the point, when you have had the glycemic charts explained, you may well wonder what exactly all the fuss was about!

Glycemic index charts are all simply lists of foods that indicate how much carbohydrate a food has and in so doing assesses the quality of the carbohydrate. Although we usually go for foods that are ranked highly, with glycemic index, this is not the case; we should always be trying to eat foods that are low in glycemic index terms!

So instead of eating highly processed, sweet and sugary foods, we should be trying to eat foods that are digested slowly and thus help us to have stable blood sugars.

Why Are Stable Blood Sugars Good For Us?

Stable blood sugars are very good in terms of helping our bodies control the levels of insulin that we produce. Too much insulin means that we effectively over produce, which is not good for the body.

Stable blood sugars also help us to feel fuller than we do if your blood sugars go through highs and lows and stable blood sugars also mean we don’t feel as tired and lethargic as we do if we eat foods that are high in carbohydrate.

 Using the Glycemic Index Chart

To use the glycemic index charts, you simply need to look up the foods that you want to eat or are contemplating eating. If they are classed as high (over 70) then avoid them, if they are low (less than 55) eat them and if they are medium (usually between 56 and 69) then only eat them in small quantities.

Over To You

That is basically all you have to do to use a glycemic index chart effectively. It can seem confusing at first but stick to low ranked glycemic index foods and you really won’t go far wrong!
